Obesity coverage: coming to a health plan near you

February 23, 2016 by Tony Novak

The most visible change in health plans for 2016 seems to be the rapidly expanding coverage for nutritional counseling and obesity treatment plans. The expansion in consumer options is triggered by a combination of ACA implementation, state mandate laws and simply expanded exploitation of these mandates by dietitians and obesity treatment centers.

More than half of all states now have a specific health benefit requirement to cover bariatric bypass surgery, dietary or nutritional screening, counseling obesity, or weight loss programs.

Specific benefits are determined by state mandate and the benchmark plans in each state. More information is available on the National Association of State Legislators web site. I offer individual support to individuals seeking more information on insurance to cover these issues at FreedomBenefits.net.

See “Health Insurance for Overweight Applicants” for more information.
